摘要
作为19世纪末美国文坛最重要的女性作家之一,伊迪丝·华顿一生著作颇丰,作品题材丰富多样,其中小说方面的成就突出。《纯真年代》和《夏季》就是她很优秀的两部小说,小说背景虽有不同,但对主人公阿切尔和切丽缇的成长经历的描写都符合成长小说的基本模式,都明显体现了主人公内心不断走向理性与成熟的成长之路,凸显了成长的主题,丰富了对成长小说的研究。两位主人公的成长也反映出作者华顿本人的成长和成熟。
As one of the most important female writers in the American literary world in the late 19th century, Edith Wharton was a very productive writer with abundant works of diverse genres, among which her achievements in novels were most outstanding. Her famous novels The Age of Innocence and Summer were set in different backgrounds, but both of them depicted the initiation process of the protagonists, Archer and Charity, which conforms with the basic model of initiation story. And both of them reflect the protagonists＇ inner initiation process of becoming more reasonable and mature, as a result, they have prominent initiation theme, which enriches the research of initiation story. The protagonists＇ initiation process also shows the writer＇s inner growth.
