在《扶桑》中,严歌苓以发掘历史为名,浓墨重彩地塑造了大勇这个亦正亦邪、饱含传奇色彩的"华人英雄"形象。然而总体来说,这部小说中的华人男性形象仍未脱出美国东方主义叙事中那个沉默猥琐的"中国佬"刻板印象。这是作家当时对美国种族主义与排华历史的特定认识状态决定的。
In her Fusang, Yan Geling, in the name of excavating history, portrays in thick and heavy colours Da Yong, a male Chinese hero that is both good and bad quite a legendary figure. Generally speaking, though, the male Chinese characters in this novel remain the silent and abject＇ Chinaman＇ stereotype of the American Orientalist narrative, which is determined by how the author understood American racism and the anti-Chinese history.
