Grotesque is mainly the unordered mixture of comic and horror, whose responses are mainly shock and laughter, disgust or fear, and anxiety. It took centuries for critics to accept this‘abnormal'form. Thus far the study of Children's literature in China focuses more on specific writers and their works, paying little to attention to the element of grotesque. However, the readers of works that contain element of grotesque are not small groups. The essay traces the origin and the development of grotesque, summaries the important theories of the grotesque, compares it with other relative literary terms, analyses one of the forms and functions in Roald Dahl's children literary works, that is,grotesque narrative, and points out the meaning of the grotesque as a category of aesthetics in Children's literature on the basis.
