Japanese literati usually wrote prefaces and postscripts in Chinese when they translated Chinese classical popular fiction or wrote novels in Chinese after Edo period. These prefaces and postscripts in chronological order could be divided into four stages: in the early Ego period, Japanese literati were used to imitating the creation of Chinese writ- ers. In the middle and late Edo period, Japanese scholars treated Chinese classical popular fiction as material for learning, and their attitude were much more rigorous. In the mean- time, the independent creative consciousness began to appear in their novels in Chinese. After Meiji restoration, Japanese scholar's creation began to make connection with reality, and affected the revolution of fiction in China.
