Objective To investigate the effects of exercise intervention on functional fitness characteristics and their changes in adults over 70-year-old with cardiovascular diseases. Methods A total of 120 patients were equally divided into control group and intervention group according to random number table. The patients in control group received routine nursing care one day before the discharge, while the patients in intervention group received a 16-week exercise intervention after the discharge. Follow-up was perofrmed in the patients of the two groups. Functional fitness characteristics were measured at the time of grouping and at 16th week after the discharge. The changes were compared between the two groups to evaluate the effects of exercise intervention. Results The main effects of functional fitness showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups(P〉0.05), while significan time-group interaction effects in the lower limb strength, upper limb strengthen, aerobic endurance and balance were observed (P 〈 0.05). Exercise intervention effectively improved functional fitness of cardiovascular disease patients aged over 70 years, but the functional fitness presented a downward trend with the growth of the age, especially in patients over 80 years. Conclusions Exercise intervention can improve functional fitness of cardiovascular disease patients over 70 years, but cannot reverse the sharp decline of body function in the elderly. Appropriate physical activity is helpful to improve the body quality of the elderly.
