The Duke University Kunshan Campus is the first university campus in China to be certified by the United States Green Building Council(USGBC) as a LEED Green Campus. The campus is distinguished by its extensive use of aquatic elements in landscape design to create a balanced and resilient hydroecological environment, making the site an "sponge campus." Based on the interviews with the project’s landscape architect Huilai Shi of Futurepolis and extensive site visits, this paper analyzes the unique landscape design concepts around the theme of hydro-ecology.The planning and design strategies and advanced techniques used in this project will shed a new light on the ongoing nationwide effort of building "Sponge City" in China.
