Barbara Baynton was a female writer honoured by "Bulletin" in the late 19th century. She was enthusiastic about the theme of Australian jungle life like the national writers Henry Lawson and A. B. Paterson, but she was a gothic writer. The tone of her work piquantly contrasted with that of her Aus-tralian contemporaries. From a female perspective, she displayed the loneliness, hopelessness and despera- tion in the gloomy and melancholic jungle. It was an established idea that Australia has a relatively short history, thus lack of castellated culture, and has yielded few gothic stories. However, Baynton's short stories proved that the gothic story has grafted into Australia and taken on an Australian feature.
