Rhyme nasalization is rare in Kam-Tai languages. The phonology of Guzuo Zhuang variety spoken in Yongfu County of Guxangxi represents shared properties of Northern Zhuang while in the meantime displays its own distinctive features, a specific case in point being its possession of a set of nasalized rhymes such as a, e, and o. Most nasalized rhymes in Guzuo Zhuang variety originate from the reduction or loss of voiced nasal endings -m, -n-, and -η, as well as the final stops -p, -t, and -k. It is argued that the formation of nasalized rhymes is connected with language contact with local Chinese dialects and contact-induced changes.
