摘要
美国当代南方作家鲍比·安·梅森以开放、去中心、质疑权威的精神在其作品中展现了当今南方男性气质的衰变,男性为此做出的徒劳捍卫以及对女性气质的吸纳,挑战了旧南方绅士的经典形象,颠覆了传统南方文化二元对立的性别规范和思维模式以及长期占统治地位的父权制霸权。梅森否定性别身份生物决定论,认为社会因素在其建构过程中发挥着至关重要的作用,故此性别身份不应是一个僵化、封闭的概念,应赋予其流动、交融性。她笔下与传统模式大相径庭的男性群体是她为与时俱进,重塑男性角色,再造性别关系做出的大胆探索,也揭示了南方生活、价值观的嬗变及其在当今语境中的新形态。
In an open, decentering and challenging spirit, Bobbie Ann Mason, a contemporary writer of the American south, represents in her stories the southern man＇s declining masculinity, his futile effort to retrieve it and his absorption of femininity, thus subverting the stereotype of the traditional southern gentleman and the dominant binary gender opposition and patriarchal hegemony of the Old South. She believes that gender identity is not completely determined by biology, and social factors play a crucial role in its construction, therefore, it should be mobile and incorporative rather than rigid and closed. Through the male characters Mason makes a bold attempt to reshape the southern man and rebalance gender relations to go with times and live for the here and now and shows the profound changes of southern life and values in a new milieu.
