摘要
长期被史学界视为"新与旧"、"激进与保守"、"先进与落后"之评价的长沙时务学堂内部纷争,从上个世纪90年代以来,随着研究日渐深入,该观点不断受到质疑。很多学者从不同的视角提出了长沙时务学堂内部纷争不是单纯的"政争"那么简单,而将之视为一场"学争"更符合其实际情形。沿此思路,运用美国学者托马斯·索维尔"圣化构想"与"悲观构想"的理论观点,认为长沙时务学堂内部纷争双方社会道德诉求的差异及其冲突应是最根本的缘由。纷争中的维新派拥有强烈的道德优越感,认为自己的思考代表了人类道德的高度,即"圣化构想"特征,而保守派从总体上相信人类文明的任何成果都是需要加以维持和保护才能持续存在下去,即"悲观构想"的意味。显然,这一思考不仅对时务学堂引起的纷争更能深入的解读、诠释,而且对近代中国诸多所谓的"新旧之争"提供一个思考视角。
Regarded as “new and old”,“radical and conservative” and “advanced and backward” in the history field for a long period, the researches on the internal strife in Changsha Shiwu Academy has been deepening and constantly questioned since 1990s. Many scholars have proposed from different angles that the internal strife is actually an academic debate rather than a pure political strug- gle^. According to the asanctification ideaM and upessimism ideaM of the American scholar Thomas Sowell, it is the social and moral differences and conflicts between both factions in Changsha Shiwu Academy that are the most fundamental reason of the internal strife. The reformers have a strong sense of moral superiority and deem their thoughts represent the human moral level, namely the M sanctifica-tion ideaJ,, while the conservatives generally believe that any of the fruits of human civilization needs to be maintained and protected to persist, namely the “ pessimism idea” ? Obviously, this interpretation not only deeply interprets internal strife in Changsha Shiwu Acad-emy, but also provides a research reflection for the so - called "old and new dispute" in modem China.
