Tang Dynasty witnessed frequent and unprecedented culture exchange among the Eastern Asian na- tions as well as the massive spread of Chinese culture, which cast far-reaching influence on the neighboring countries, especially Japan. Abeno Nakmaro, also known by his Chinese name as Zhao Heng, the most out- standing of all Japanese students who ever came to China during the Tang Dynasty, stayed in China for more than 50 years, making his own legendary life an epitome of the Sino-Japanese relations at that time. However, many questions about this key figure of Sino-Japanese cultural exchanges remaind unclear, or it might be safe to say that a set of rigid discourse had been formed about his experiences in China, casting a shadow over many valuable details. This paper builds its research upon the deeds of Zhao Heng and the Japanese missions during the last few years of the Tianbao Period, and focuses on the relevant poetry and prose as the main sub- jects of study, and centers around his name and title, hoping to restore some long forgotten facts of the Sino- Japanese cuhurel exchanges during the Tang Dynasty.
