Deracialization is the political strategy of the new generation of black politicians used in the post-Civil Rights era of the United States as a response of the black politics to the rise of conservatism in the late 20th century. Obama’s victory in the 2008 presidential campaign has fully proved its effectiveness as a campaign strategy. However, the experience of the Obama administration with the strategy in the past 8 years demonstrates that his ascendency to the presidency has more to do with the symbolism of being the first black president than to bring any substantial benefits and improvement to the racial relations in the United States. His deracialization strategy only makes racial issues more marginalized and the reality of black-white inequalities are more ignored in American politics. The result of 2016 presidential campaign seems to indicate that there is still an uneven road for the United States to enter into the era of a colorblind post-racial society.
