刘恒乡土题材小说是一个封闭但又意义驳杂的文学文本,他将视野投注到20世纪80年代中后期社会转型的剧变环境中,对乡土个体进行探寻和剖析,从而揭示乡土个体或群体的真实生活形态、生存境遇和生命本能。窥探刘恒笔下所呈现的乡土权力空间,不仅对女性个体生理和心理造成极度的规训和控制,而且乡土权力执行者的男性也未能幸免于难。他用犀利的目光和同情的笔触描摹现代文明冲击下的乡土社会形形色色的众生相,尽管乡土个体以身体反抗权力失败了,但却表现"力气"、金钱、传统伦理等原始欲望空间下个体的真实生存形态。
