In the late Ming Dynasty, the development of illustrations reached a peak in the history. The importance of image as an information dissemination carrier has increased rapidly, with its influence surpassing over words. Long before this, image is just a supplement to the text, and status of illustrators is much lower than that of authors. The thesis analyzes the development and spread of the narrative illustrations by studying the development of engraveing books in Ming Dynasty. By doing this, social customs, cultural ideological trend and aesthetic taste behind these illustrations are clearly revealed.
