摘要
译本序文是环绕作品正文本的主要副文本,不仅为读者进入正文本营造了阅读空间和审美氛围,其中包含的"深度批评"还为作品的文学史定位和经典化提供了一定的支撑。《红楼梦》各种英译本的序文不仅呈现了《红楼梦》在向西方传播的过程中被西方人理解和接受的历史,折射出近现代百年间西方世界看待中国文化态度的改变,还展示出西方学者阐释《红楼梦》时所采用的不同视角以及得出的不同结论,从而反映出《红楼梦》在西方不同时期的文艺美学视域中呈现出的不同面貌。从乔利的《红楼梦》英译本自序和阿瑟·威利与马克·范·多伦为王际真的两个《红楼梦》英译本所作的序文中可以看出,20世纪60年代的世界民主化运动之前,英语世界在译介《红楼梦》这部中国经典文学作品时,占有中心统治地位的西方文化形成的权力话语对原作中的异己因素采取了利用、忽视、压制、同化等各种手段。这样做,虽然客观上促进了《红楼梦》在西方世界的传播和接受,却迫使《红楼梦》承受了被扭曲、篡改和误读的命运。
Preface of translation is a major paratext, not only creating a reading and appreciating atmos-phere ,but also supporting the locating and canonizing of the original book in literary history. The prefaces of English versions of Dream of the Red Chamber not only present the history of Dream of the Red Chamber being understood and accepted by the Western world, which reflects the change of westerners 5 attitudes towards Chinese culture, but also reflect different presentations of Dream of the Red Chamber in different historical pe-riods from different aesthetic perspectives. In the prefaces of H BENCRAFT JOLY ' s and WANG CHI- CHEN ' s ( ritten by ARTHUR WALEY and MARK VAN DOREN) translations of Dream of the Red Chamber, we can see that before 1960s , in the translation and introduction of Dream of the Red Chamber in the western world , the original book was utilized, ignored, oppressed and assimilated by the power discourse with western culture in the dominating center. Although these approaches objectively promoted the spreading and accept-ance of Dream of the Red Chamber in the western world, Dream of the Red Chamber had to suffer the destiny of being distorted, falsified and misread.
