The term'xiansuo'was first mentioned in the Tang Dynasty. Its meaning constantly changed in the Dynasties of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing. Originally it referred to instruments or musical genres, later it meant local operas, quyi or court musical establishments in the Qing Dynasty. But the comprehensive and thorough analysis for its research was rarely done, especially in the literature study of the Song Dynasty when this term was extensively used and possessed rich meanings. In that period, it not only referred to the instrument strings but also meant small instrumental ensembles in which the strings were involved. As for definition, it connected from the prosperous Tang Dynasty to the natures of the Jin and Yuan Dynasties.
