Examining Ezeulu’s neurosis from the perspective of Horneyan Psychoanalysis, this paper is intended to examine the African indigenous administrative class’s ethical dilemma in the transitional society. Through close reading of Arrow of God in the socio-cultural context of Nigeria,we come to the conclusion that Ezeulu is a compliant-aggressive type of neurotic, whose attempts at the solution to the irreconcilable conflicts with the European colonists and with his tribesmen turn out to be futile and finally give rise to his self-es?trangement. Achebe depicts Ezeulu’s tragic fate resulting from his over-emphasis on individualism, with the aim of attacking the indigenous administrative class’s ethical deficiency, which highlights the far-reaching in-fluence of one’s sense of responsibility and his political insight upon the national development of Nigeria.
