The formation of the national consciousness of the ethnic minority groups in the borderland of China is the result of the borderland integration by different dynasties of China and the interaction among different ethnic minority groups.Historical writing is a major cultural vehicle for this integration.Under the influence of such national culturalism, these dynasties constructed a fairly complete paradigm of continuous historical writing with typical examples, which ensured the historical writing of their national consciousness embodied in the top-down cultural construction, and was the premise and foundation of the bottom-up responses from the ethnic minority groups in the borderland.Their response through the copy of the legends and myths aimed at obtaining a Chinese identity. On the basis of mutual construction, the ethnic minority groups as the object of historical writing in these dynasties were no longer the outside cognizer because the historical consciousness of these dynasties became the cultural image constructed by both parties while the shared historical identity and their national consciousness were strengthened. The paper also discusses the mutual construction of the historical narration of the state and the borderland groups as well as their roles in the formation of their national identity, which may provide some theoretical interpretation of the national identity of the ethnic groups in the borderland.
