Evolutionary developmental biology or "Evo-Devo" is one of the most promising areas of research in evolutionary biology today. Many of its practitioners see findings in this area as the key to explaining phenomena which range from highly constrained features of genetics and morphology to the bewildering array of adaptive organismal complexity in the past as well as the present and even the major evolutionary transitions. The more radical proponents of evo-devo, who prefer the monikers developmental evolutionary biology("Devo-Evo") or developmental systems theory("DST"), have taken matters a step further by arguing that the modern synthesis of Darwinian natural selection with Mendelian(and now molecular) genetics cannot in principle suffice as an explanation for the aforementioned phenomena. In so doing they advocate for "conceptual revolution" or "paradigm shift" in our understanding of evolutionary questions and the approaches used to resolve them. It is with regard to these latter, more extreme, claims of evo-devo that we take issue. We herein examine the historical, empirical, and philosophical underpinnings of these claims and ultimately find them wanting.
