Until the emergence of academies in17th-century Europe, architects and builders learned their craft mainly through apprenticeship with artists or master craftsmen,a traditional practice rooted in the Middle Ages. The culture of Baroque,a transitional era between medieval guild and modern profession,is characterized by the fusion of a great variety of arts and crafts- painting, sculpture, architecture, music and theatre,as exemplified in the genius of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.Together with Bernini,Francesco Borromini dictated the norms and gist of Italian Baroque architecture. But unlike his rival,Borromini's craft is purely architectonic,as revealed in his dexterous application of geometrical forms, careful treatment of materials, mastery of stonemasonry, and exquisite draftsmanship. His legacy outlived that of Bernini, exercising widespread and lasting influence across space and time.
