Hiddink, the head coach of the South Korean football team, helped South Korea win the fourth place in the World Cup 2002, which was a record high, thus elevating the position of South Korea on the global sports stage. Hiddink therefore became a national hero and a widely known star in the world. The incident of Hiddink being a both global and local hero was an unique case to study sports globalization, nationalism and citizenship. Hiddink just happened to assemble all favorable conditions. The success of Hiddink and his status as a national hero indicate profound significance of sports in the South Korean society, which is closely linked to traditional cultural values. Against the political and economic background featured by neoliberalism, the success of sports in South Korea exhibits the special values attached by sports. All of these reflect the specialty of Hiddink as a football coach, which is his distinct coaching style and strategies.
