Background Although general anesthetics have been used in clinic for nearly 170 years, it is still unclear how these drugs modulate the state of general anesthesia in the brain. Mounting evidence shows that the locus coeruleus (LC) noradrenergic (NE) system (LC-NE) may play an important role in the modulation of general anesthesia. Objective To review the progresses about the roles of the LC-NE system in modulating general anesthesia. Content General anesthetics may exert their sedative and hypnotic effects through inhibition of LC-NE system. Trend To provide a new view angle for the mechanism study of general anesthesia through discussing the role of the LCoNE system in general anesthesia.
