尤金·奥尼尔是一位关注人类生存发展的戏剧大师,《榆树下的欲望》是他探索人类精神领域,为人类未来和人格的健全发展寻找出路的尝试。《榆树下的欲望》一剧中欲望肆虐地控制着人们的精神生活,造成人与人之间冷漠疏离,相互之间缺乏关爱,人性异化扭曲,追求幸福的正常的心理机制被摧毁,爱的能力被抑制。奥尼尔经过探索,提出爱是消弭隔阂、化解仇恨,引导人们获得幸福的唯一途径。
Eugeue O＇Neill is a famous American playwright who cares about human-being＇s living conditions. Desire Under the Elms is his attempt to explore a way to solve human-being＇s spiritual and psychological predicament. In Desire Under the Elms, desires control human-beings＇ life and result in human＇s alienation which sees each other as strangers in the family. In this play, love is absent in life and human-beings are incapable to love others. O＇Neill appeals to love to solve all those problems and puts out that only through love,people can get happiness.
