Objective:To study the influence of progressive muscle relaxation training on craving and anxiety in withdrawal period of alcohol dependent patients.Methods:Thirty- nine patients with alcohol dependence diagnosed with DSM- Ⅳ were randomly divided into the intervention group and control group. Patients in the intervention group received progressive muscle relaxation training for 30 min and individuals in the control group listened to 30 min non- interfering music. We collected data of the skin conductance response, the anxiety visual scale and the visual craving scale before and after treatment. Results:Using the methods of ANOVA for repeated measurement,we found that after relaxation training, the intervention group patients showed reduced skin conductance response( 1. 80 ± 0. 82 vs3. 30 ± 1. 34; F = 4. 59,P = 0. 04) and anxiety–visual analogue scale( 1. 97 ± 1. 82 vs 2. 23 ± 1. 79,F = 6. 09,P = 0. 01). The systolic blood pressure( 123. 50 ± 15. 57 vs 127. 58 ± 9. 05,F = 2. 81,P =0. 10),the diastolic blood pressure( 87. 65 ± 10. 02 vs 84. 10 ± 12. 49,F = 1. 97,P = 0. 17) and the heart rate( 80. 85 ± 2. 51 vs 85. 16 ± 2. 53,F = 0. 23,P = 0. 64) had no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion:Progressive muscle relaxation training can effectively reduce the psychological craving after exposure to cues of alcohol and improve anxiety.
