The primitive pottery skills of the Li people on Hainan Island is an intangible cultural heritage of China. This paper discusses the reasons on how the Li tribe has preserved its ancient pottery craftsmanship for over5000 years. There are four main reasons: firstly, the long primitive society has restricted the development of the original pottery technique of the Li tribe; secondly, the unique groups of Li people has provided makers and consumers with the original pottery skills; thirdly, the "barter"transaction mode has provided trading opportunities to Li pottery; and finally the ease in the use of the technique has made it possible for Li families to produce simple pottery as a family sideline. As such, the valuable intangible cultural heritage in the primitive era——the pottery skill of the Li tribe in Hainan——has been well preserved from generation to generation until now.
