Sam Shepard, the famous contemporary American playwright, expresses his eternal emotions to the Wild West in the plays, repeating the collages of Western images as cowboys, ranchers, wilderness, horse racing and etc. As far as he is concerned, the old frontier myth has been declined, and the contemporary myth is constructed in the popular culture spread by the electronic media. Accordingly,Shepard represents the cowboy dream as the symbol of male identity and the wilderness ideal as the symbol of American spirit in his plays, reveals the conflicts between pop cultural imageries and social realities, and reconstructs the West in the fictitious media context leaving the question of the region and persistence of "True West" to the audience.
