Scientific Socialism, established after the birth of Marxism, has existed for two centuries and realized two historical leaps, one from Utopia to science in the 19 th century and the other from theory to reality in the 20 th century. In the 21 st century, Socialism around the world regains momentum in its development, which is mainly manifested in the following facts: the reforms in various socialist countries have achieved fruitful results, presenting their respective characteristics;the international socialist movement revived after a long lull;there emerged varied and diversified schools of thoughts of socialism;the research on socialism around the world continually developed;and the socialist system kept improving and showed its superiority. A research on the present development of Socialism around the world helps to grasp the laws of development of Socialism, keep up with the trend of world development, and strengthen our confidence in developing Socialism with Chinese characteristics.

  • 5Under American and British leadership, the "Bretton Woods sys tem" saw the establishment of two international financial institu tions. The first was the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development (later the World Bank), whose job was to make loans for national economic development. The second was the International Monetary Fund (IMF), created to eliminate the competitive currency devaluations of the 1930s that had halted trade and exacerbated in ternational tensions. In their place, the IMF offered a more stable monetary system, where the value of each country's currency was pegged to the U.S. dollar, which in turn was pegged to a fixed amount of gold.
