The offshore trade market in the Song Dynasty was a regional market of large scale and considerable independence. Its commodities include grain, imports and exports and specialties from various regions, which enabled different regions to complement each other, and the market served as a basis for the development of commodity economy in coastal areas and that of overseas trade. Those engaged in offshore trading included professional traders at home, merchants from abroad and large numbers of coastal boatmen. For coastal residents, offshore trading is the fundamental and most prevalent way of making a living, the importance of which exceeded that of overseas trade. The government in the Song Dynasty permitted offshore trade among local and foreign merchants, but imposed strict regulations. The government of the Southern Song Dynasty requisitioned civilian boats for coastal defense and state-organized transportations ,which sacrificed overseas trade to some extent, but had relatively little impact on offshore trade. Studying offshore trade can lead to a better understanding of the characteristics of economic development in coastal regions, the source of living of the coastal residents, and the relationship between the offshore market, the overseas market, and the inland market.
