专业学生议论文中情态动词的使用特征 被引量:9

A Corpus-based Study of the Modal Verbs in English Majors' Argumentative Essays

摘要 本文以WECCL 1.0与2.0为实验语料,以LOCNESS为参照语料,对原始文本进行预处理后,采用主题性分析,对比分析中国英语专业大学生议论文中情态动词的使用情况。研究发现:(1)我国专业学生(1996-2007)议论文中情态动词使用频率不均衡。Can,should,will,may,must,need和ought to等义务情态动词(A类)被过多使用,而可以表达委婉情态的典型认知(B类)情态动词如would,could和might则被过少使用;(2)两组大学生议论文中情态动词使用表现区别不大,认知情态动词使用情况也无进步表现。文章从情态转化、习得以及语言实践等视角对结果进行解释,是对前人研究结果的继承与发展,对于情态动词的教与学有一定的启示作用。 This paper takes WECCL 1. 0 and 2. 0 as experimental corpora and LOCNESS as comparative one,examines the features of modal verbs in Chinese English majors' argumentation. Finding reveals:( 1) The use frequence of modal verbs is unequal: Majors overuse those modal verbs which are of deontic modality,such as can,should,will,may,must,need,ought to,and underuse those modal verbs( would,could,might) which characterized by epistemic modality as well as those often used in subjunctive conditions. Besides,there is no significant difference between the two groups in usage of modal verbs in their argumentative essays and no progress in the use of epistemic modal verbs. Finally,this study,being the succession and development of previous studies,provides interpretations for the result from the perspective of modal conversion,modal acquisition,language practice and some implications for modal verbs teaching and learning.
