The Road, a popular fiction written by American author Cormac McCarthy, tells a story about a pair of father and son struggling to survive in the apocalyptic world after a catastrophe. The novel, ever since its publication in 2006, has gained a wide popularity among readers and attracted the great interest of scholars at home and abroad. From the perspective of ethical literary criticism and based on Joseph Fletcher’s theory of situational ethics, this paper analyzes the protagonist father’s ethical choices in the face of different ethical environments under the background of human ethical disorder. This paper argues that each ethical choice made by father paves the way for his later essential dilemma. It also reveals the ethical significance of situational ethical choice of the protagonist in the doomsday world of destruction of human civilization and collapse of moral system.
