Wang Xu( 1858- 1933) is a famous officer, calligrapher and poet, living in the period of Late Qing Dynasty and Early Republic of China, whose hometown is Laiyang in Shandong province. He was born in a farming and reading aristocratic family. From his childhood,he was studious and inquisitive, and extensively read Confucian classics. In Guangxu fifteen years( 1889),he succeeded in the national civil service examination and made the former third degree candidate called chin- shih. He worked in Imperial Academy. Righteous and incorrupt as he was,he himself did well in securing an official position and devoted to common people. Being honest and respectable,he gave priority to the country rather than his family, and escorted the emperor to the west. Later he lived in Qingdao with common people sharing the joys and sorrows. Wang xu comprehensively copied calligraphies of celebrities, which contributes to his own style of calligraphy called " Xu" style. His calligraphy is so elegant while his poems are mostly lyric, both of which created astounding significance in the history of Laiyang city.
