In his early years, Yu Yan (1258-1327) learned Confucian classics including Zhu Xi's (1130-1200) Zhouyi henyi (Original Meaning of the Zhou Changes ) and Cheng Yi's (1033-1107) Yizhuan (Commentary on the Changes ). Synthesizing meanings-and-principles and image-numerology, and through several decades of accumulative efforts, he composed his Zhouyi jishuo (Collected Discussions on the Zhou Changes). He revised his draft four times in order to better represent the sages' meanings. He articulated many incisive points of view which had not been disclosed by Zhu Xi and Cheng Yi. This manifests his contribution to orthodox Changes scholarship. In the prime of his life, he was instructed by some recluse and by chance obtained Daoist approaches to the Changes by which he discovered the secret of the Taiji tu (Diagram of Supreme Ul- timate) and attained to marvels of alchemical refinery. In order to shed light on Shao Yong's (1011-1077) learning of the Changes based on diagrams and charts and expand Wei Boyang's alchemical refinery theory explicated in Cantong qi, he wrote the Zhouyi cantong qi fahui (A Clarification of the Token for the Agreement of the Three According to the Zhou Changes) and Yizvai biechuan (Separate Transmission beyond the Changes), which exhibited his contribution to the assimilation of the Changes into Daoism.
