It is a brand-new academic attempt to explore the earliest time of the introduction of Buddhism in- to the Tumen River Valley. This paper conducted empirical researches surrounding the Yangmu Linzi Temple Site and the Temple Site No. 1 at Gucheng Village: on one hand, new cognizing clues were ob- tained from the long-forgotten artifacts collected in the museums; on the other hand, new views were opened for the seeking of the site of the Zhacheng Prefecture, which was the " old prefecture of the Koguryo Kingdom" recorded in the historic literature. The new-discovered architectural parts and Buddhist relics and the relevant research results showed that the Hunchun River Valley was not only the central zone of the administrative area of the Zhacheng Prefecture but also the area influenced the earliest by the Buddhism. When the Guonei City was the capital of the Koguryo Kingdom, the architec- tural pottery craftsmen of the downfallen Former Yan Kingdom entered the Hunchun River Valley fol- lowing the Buddhist monks, and the Temple Site No. 1 at Gucheng Village constructed by them was the earliest Buddhist temple in the Tumen River Valley. Based on the newest archaeological discoveries and referring to the historic literature, this paper drew the conclusion that the Buddhism was introduced into the Tumen River Valley during the Koguryo Kingdom period.
