The Secret River is a representative work of the contemporary Australian woman writer Kate Granville, who was awarded Commonwealth Writers Prize in 2006. It reconstructs a long lost history of Australia by making spatial narratives instead of traditional historical narrative. Interpreted from the perspective of spatial narratives, it illustrates Granville s ingenuity, that is, by describing a convict s spatial shift and transformation from Britain to Australia, she displays the development of the colonial space and the colonists subjectivity, and reveals the evils of the colonists who seized the aboriginal people's land and deprived them of their basic human rights. In fact, Granville has a keen observation of the spatial characteristics of history, and the relationship between space and power.
