朱利安·巴恩斯在《终结的感觉》中探讨了个体记忆与身份的关系。主人公托尼出于身份建构的需求,受情感、心理定势和时间等因素的影响,虚构了自己的记忆,建构出与现实自我不同的个人身份。但记忆的虚构性意味着托尼的记忆漏洞百出,建立在此基础之上的身份在自己和他人的记忆中同时被解构。巴恩斯通过托尼身份建构、解构和重构的复杂经历,揭示了记忆的虚构性和身份的不确定性,探讨了个体如何认识自我和接受自我。
In The Sense of an Ending ,Julian Barnes explores the relationship between personal memories and identity. Under the influence of his emotions,mental set,time,and a desire to construct his identity,Tony,the narrator of the novel, fabricates part of his memory,thus constructing a personal identity different from his true self.However,Tony’s fictitious memories are full of loopholes.Thus,identities created out of these memories are deconstructed by both Tony’s and others’ memories.With Tony’s experience of constructing,deconstructing and reconstructing his identity,Julian Barnes reveals the unreliability of memory and the uncertainty of personal identity,and explores how to understand and accept one’s self.
