The fluctuating asymmetry( FA) of the skull of Macaca mulatta in Taihang Mountains and the factors which likely influenced FA variation were investigated in this study. The specimens of cranium consisting of sixty-two adult individuals, including nineteen males and forty-three females, were divided into groups according to gender and age,respectively.Twenty-four variables on both sides of the skull were measured and converted into values of FA. All the statistics were computed by SPSS 20. 0. The results showed that there was no significant difference of FA values among gender or ages. The values of FA tended to be higher in female than in male, and higher in the sub-adults than in the adults, however, their differences were not statistically significant( P〈0. 05). Results suggested that the fluctuating asymmetry patterns of skull variables may be different from ones of their limb bones, and may reflect,to some degree, the plasticity in bilateral asymmetry with respect to early developmental factors and environmental factors of M. mulatta.
