The abandonment or underutilization of former urban industrial lands (brownfields) and their reconsideration as viable sites of recovery and regeneration has resulted in the need for new modes of both research and design inquiry to be developed by landscape architects. The location and types of brownfield sites within the national landscape and the methods, means and materials of creating innovative landscape environments with the very fabric of brownfield sites are introduced over the period from 1980 to the present. In particular, national perceptions towards these environmentally compromised sites along with academic responses through brownfield conferences are discussed alongside design speculations for the creative and legible reuse and integration of these vital sites through case studies of brownfield regeneration and reuse on landscapes. Finally speculations are offered as to how this class of landscape will evolve in the coming decade.
