Arthur Danto has no standard definition for his art, which is reconstructed and provided by Noel Carol. This paper, on the basis of Danto' s "The Transfiguration of the Commonplace," introduces the popular version of Danto' s art definition, i. e. , for something to be a work of art, it must embody five prerequisites: its aboutness, its projecting a point of view, its using some rhetorical ellipsis, its interpretability, and its containing some kind of art - historical background. This paper recategorizes the five prerequisites as three, namely symbolicity, expressivity and historicity. Danto' s definition is a special form of the theory of art as symbol and expression.
