Objective To test the usability of a smartphone application(app) designed to support caregivers of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL). Methods Fifteen caregivers of ALL children in Soochow Uni- versity Affiliated Children's Hospital in June 2014 were recruited in this study using convenience sampling method. The APP was installed on each caregiver's Android system smartphone. A 3-week trial of the APP's usability was conducted. The times of errors or problems in the APP were recorded within the 3 weeks. Moreover, participants' using behaviors were investigoted by self-made questionnaire, and the using experience were collected by face-to- face or telephone interview. Results No error or problem was reported in the use of APP within the three weeks. Of the 15 participants,6 caregivers used the APP very often (one or more than one time a day),7 caregivers used the APP occasionally(one time every two or three days) and 2 caregivers used the APP rarely(one time every week). Four caregivers used the APP 5 to 10 minutes every time,8 earegivers used the APP 10 to 30 minutes every time and 3 caregivers used the APP more than 30 minutes every time. The modules being used from high to low frequency were knowledge education, family care, social support, reminder, interactive platform, treatment tracking,self- assessment questionnaire and personal information. Participants highly appreciated the using experience of the APP. They felt that the APP was quite user-friendly and convenient. Also, they provided some improvement suggestions. Conclusion The APP developed for earegivers of ALL children is applicable and easy to use, which can be used to support earegivers and to promote the care quality for children with ALL.
