Objective To explore the correlation between serum adiponectin level and motor symptoms and non--motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods Ninety--four PD patients and Ninety healthy controls admitted to our hospital were involved in this study. Serum adipone- ctin levels were measured by ELISA methods in patients with PD and healthy controls. The age, gender, madopa tablets dose of PD patients were recorded. In addition, part III of Unified Parkinson disease rating scale (UPDRS) scores, Hoehn-Yahr (H-Y) stage, Activity of Daily Living Scale (ADL) scores, Webster scores, Fatigue severity scale (FSS) scores, Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scores, SCOPA--AUT scores and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) scores were evaluated in PD patients. Results The serum levels of adiponectin were (8.2±2.6)mg/L in PD patients, significantly lower than healthy controls (17. 5 ±7. 1)mg/L, and the difference was statistically significant (t =- 4.12, P 〈 0.01). There was a negative correlation between serum levels of adiponectin and UPDRS scores, H-Y stage, Webster scores, ADL scores and PSQI scores (r =- 0.71, -0. 82, -0. 77, -0. 64, -0.69, respectively; P 〈 0.05). Conclusions Serum adiponectin levels were decreased in PD patients. There was a correlation between serum adiponectin levels and motor symptoms as well as non-motor symptoms in patients with PD.
