Japanese geisha is a living embodiment of Japanese traditional culture, which can be traced back to the Miko before the ancient society. This paper makes a diachronic study of geisha with Japanese national religion—the faith of Shintoism as the starting point. The emergence and development of geisha are divided into four historical periods, namely the pre-ancient period, ancient period, medieval period and the Edo period, through which the prototype of geisha are respectively analyzed. Then a conclusion is drawn that geisha is developed from Miko, female ofifcials,“sirabyousi”,“asobime”,“yuujyo”, and“odoriko”.
