The Taipei Performing Arts Center consists of a central cube and three theatres that plug into the central cube. The body shape is very complex and irregular. The structure is located in the high seismic intensity area with high seismicperformance requirements. The base isolated system was adopted as the optimum economic and technical solution throughanalyses and comparisons. The lateral and the torsional stiffness of the superstructure, the selection of the isolator type andparameters were determined in design. The base isolated system enabled to control the seismic forces and displacements ofthe members to acceptable levels with a high degree of reliability. Seismic action of the base isolation scheme were reducedby over 60% compared to a conventional seismic solution. The friction pendtllum type isolator was chosen since theydelivered a better performance than other types in economy and simpler details.
