Literary works reflect new trends in mentality and attitudes more directly than conscious and rational elaborations. Moreover, literature is a precious source for the history of mentality, as it explores ignored and perturbing emotions, which are not recognized by official cultural models, and are of-ten removed from non-artistic language. Through the contextual analysis of Yuan Mei's Zibuyu, we single out Yuan Mei's challenge on traditional concepts of religion, cosmic order and history oriented by Confucianism. Therefore, literary materials are able to manifest certain dissatisfactions towards the moral solutions of Neo-Confucianism, its orthodoxy, the official concept of the cosmic order, and thus makes themselves an important kind of historical source to understand a period in its hidden aspects. Through this work, literary materials are able to broaden the cognitive frontiers of consciousness.
