It can be deduced from the the translation history of the Chinese Character"Yi"before the Opium War that the choices of the translation strategies concerning the very character is dictated largely by the pragmatic purposes of various translation patrons, who only resort to the European discourse of civilization to serve the purposes. The English translations of the character, either "barbarian"or "foreigner",can not be the influential event affecting the Sino- UK relationships in later years.
