Objective This study was on the surveillance of respiratory infectious disease of Hajj pilgrims returning from Mecca in October 2013. The study was focused on the MERS virus and other respiratory viruses. Methods A total of 511 respiratory tract samples were collected from Xinjiang, Gansu and Beijing ports, and the detection of MERS virus was followed by WHO recommended RT-PCR method. Moreover, the influenza virus A,B, metapneumovirus and respiratory syncytial virus were detected as a parallel control. Results No MERS virus was detected in collected samples. Other respiratory infectious disease viruses were detected in 30 samples (influenza virus A 20 cases, influenza virus B 7 cases, metapneumovirus 2 cases and respiratory syncytial virus 1 case). The total disease detection rate was 5.87%. The influenza virus A was the most frequent respiratory virus (3.91%). Further demographic data analysis showed that female detection rate (8.29%) of respiratory virus was higher than the male (4.81%), and all infected patients were in the range of 51-70 years old. Conclusion The MERS virus was not detected in Hajj pilgrims returning from Mecca this year. The influenza virus A was likely the most frequent pathogen of respiratory virus infection during pilgrimage. Furthermore, female and senior pilgrims may be more susceptible to infect the MERS virus during the Hajj.
