From 2005 to 2009, the CASS-Institute of Archaeology and the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology conducted seven excavations at the locale No.1 of the Longwangcan site. The excavations have identified several concentrated burnt-surface areas with lithic products, and have unearthed more than 30000 pieces of stone products as well as fine shell ornaments. Based on the analyses of the distribution, assemblages, and functions of unearthed lithic artifacts, the author suggest that the locale No. 1 of the Longwangcan site might have been used for mining stone resources and initial processing of stone tools during the Upper Paleolithic period. The production of stool artifacts can be technologically characterized as a small scale and non-standardized industry. The discovery of the site provides an important piece of information for understanding the ecological environment, the human-environment relationship, and the subsistence techniques between the Late Paleolithic and the Early Neolithic period.
