Compared with the 1980s, 1990s witnessed a significant decline of Japanese labor productivity which has lasted so far. A series of factors, such as inadequate training of employees, aging population, slowing of technical progress and industrial restructuring, decline of citizen investment rate and deterioration of natural environment both at home and abroad, have resulted in the decline of Japanese labor productivity, which has restrained the growth of Japanese potential output, and, along with the output gap due to lack of domestic demand, and led to Japanese long-term economic downturn.
