The intestinal integrity plays an essential role in nutrition, metabolism, and whole-body homeostasis. The gastrointestinal tract is important as the first defense of the body against bacteria-derived endogenous and exogenous harmful agents. The integrity of the intestinal epithelium ensures its normal physiological functions. In contrast, any damage to the mucosal epithelium can impair the absorption of nutrients, thereby reducing the growth performance and compromising the health of animals. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is a thiol donor and a precursor of L-cysteine and reduced glutathione. The physiologic functions and therapeutic effects of NAC are largely associated with maintaining the levels of intracellular glutathione ( GSH). Dietary supplementation with NAC alleviates the mucosal damage and improves the absorptive function of the small intestine in li- popolysaccharide-challenged piglets. In addition, NAC supplementation could alleviate the mucosal damage and restore the colon function of acetic acid-challenged piglets. The underlying mechanisms of NAC' s action mainly include elevating biogenesis of epidermal growth factor, enhancing capacity of anti-apoptosis and increasing expression of fight junction proteins. This paper reviewed research advances of NAC' s action on porcine intestinal functions.
