When Marco Casagrande first visited Taiwan in 2002, he experienced a visceral bifurcation between the City's soft, humanistic street life and its offi cal urban forms. His encounter with Treasure Hill--where grandmothers ruled an argricultural enclave in the center of Taipei--deepened this sense of seperation. In this essay, Casagrande reflects on this experience, opining that Taiwan is on the threshold of an urban ecological awakening. On Casagrande's reading, Taiwan must decide how its cities will develop because much of the island'sheavy industry has already moved to the surrounding countries and its citizens anticipate the clean-up and environmental rehabilitation of former industrial cities. And there's the rub: will Taiwan continue copying the artificial Western urban face-lifts or will it be the Japanese – Singapore–style eco-fascism? Or is Taiwan able to look deep into the mirror and see, realize and use its own original Taiwan Residents – Chinese hidden social values and energies and develop a new compost like organic way of environmentally sustainable urban living?
