In early 2010, Paris Mayor Bertrand Delano? first proposed renovating the banks of theSeine. After conducting viability studuesm sustantainability reports, and citizen opinion polls, the general consensus was that it was necessary to do more than simply clean-up and repair the Left and Right Banks. They decided to convert the 2.3 kilometer stretch of road that connects the Musay d'Orsay to the Musée du Quai Branly from car lanes into a public space that combined the cultural, recreational, leasure and environmental needs of citizens. These four themes themselves had been decided through a public survey, and were realized through locations such as a skateboard park, circus area, coffee shops and children's play areas. The underlying theme of all the installations was reversibility. In other words, all of the interventions were temporary, and could be quickly built and dismantled as necessary. Interestingly, in French, this style of reversible architecture was called 'scénographie', drawing attention to the architectural inspirations of the theater and the city as stage.
